Mateja Ratej is the editor of Biographical Studies (Lives And Works Collection), published by the Institute for Cultural history (ICH) at SC SASA and a Section Editor at the New Slovenian Biographical Lexicon. She is the Deputy of the Head of the Institute and a member of the Publishing Council of the Publishing House SC.

Through micro- and culturally-historic studies she researches biographies of the past more or less anonymous individuals, who are in historic studies usually painted as part of an unintelligible mass of subordinates. However, it is only through their lives that one can glimpse at a convincing approximation of the historical eras. As the philosopher Mladen Dolar writes in the foreword to her book Russian Diptych (2014) it is in the individual, familial, psychological and legal microcosms that the macrocosms of social, political and historical forces are enigmatically mirrored.
