The New Slovenian Biographical Lexicon (NSBL)

Description

The New Slovenian Biographical Lexicon is the Slovenian national biographical lexicon and one of the main projects of ZRC SAZU and the Institute of Cultural History of ZRC SAZU. It continues and builds on the work of the Slovenian Biographical Lexicon, which was published from 1925–1991. In extended descriptions, it presents the most prominent Slovenian and Slovenian-related personalities from all historical periods up to the present day. Since 2009, The New Slovenian Biographical Lexicon is also available on the Slovenian Biography web portal. The creators of The New Slovenian Biographical Lexicon follow a well-established research approach in the field of biographical studies, resulting in entries based on verified facts and a structure comparable to the Central European tradition of biographical lexicons. Alongside detailed factual information on birth, schooling and occupation, the biographical articles provide a cultural-historical setting of the personality in space and time. The authors of the biographical articles are experts in the fields of activity of the personalities included in The New Slovenian Biographical Lexicon, which allows for a credible evaluation of their work.

So far, the following volumes have been published in print: Volume One: A (2013), Volume Two: B–Bla (2017), Volume Three: Ble–By (2018), Volume Four: C (2022) and Volume Five: Č (2022).

In the selection and compilation of the glossary, the creators of The New Slovenian Biographical Lexicon are assisted by the NSBL GUIDELINES for the selection of personalities, and for the work with the glossaries, we have compiled INSTRUCTIONS for the NSBL contributors to facilitate the orientation of authors and editors in the writing and preparation of the texts. Equally important is the QUESTIONNAIRE for The New Slovenian Biographical Lexicon, which is to be filled in by living personalities whom we know or foresee being included in the glossary. This also enriches the Archive of the Slovenian Biographical Lexicon SBL, which remains a treasure trove of material for researchers and interested users.
